Lincoln Alumni Stories: Georgina Thompson
Georgina Thompson studied A-Levels in Philosophy and Law at the College. At the time of writing, she is a Business Development Executive at The Day, a company that provides educational news resources to schools. Her time at Lincoln College ignited her passion for ethics and justice, shaping her academic and career path.
“I wasn’t sure what I really wanted to do in life,” Georgina shared. “Moving to Lincoln and attending an open day at the College helped me realise I could study subjects like Law and Philosophy. It was because of my time there, especially with teachers like Hilty and Mike Gothorpe, that I found a real love for ethics, justice, and society.” This newfound passion led her to pursue a Philosophy, Politics, and Economics degree at the University of Brighton, where she graduated with First Class Honours.
Since completing her studies, Georgina has embarked on an exciting career, mainly focused on sales and trade events. She enjoys the vibrant social aspect of her role, particularly the chance to constantly meet new people. In her current position, she works closely with teachers, offering training and demonstrations on how to use The Day’s resources to engage students and empower them to form their own opinions.
Georgina is proud of her career achievements, including her work on sustainability at her previous company, Prysm, where she created the ‘Sustainability Trail’ section for trade shows. “The initiative had a huge impact on the company,” Georgina said. “It’s now being adopted across different departments.” However, her journey hasn’t been without challenges. The pandemic was a particularly difficult time as the events industry was hit hard. Still, it also allowed her to reassess her career direction and ultimately led her to her current fulfilling role.
When asked about her future aspirations, Georgina emphasised her desire to continue making an impact within her current company. “I want to progress in my current role and be an integral part of the company’s growth, or, if an opportunity arises, move into a more senior role at another organisation.”
To those aspiring to work in business development or a similar industry, Georgina has some straightforward advice: “Be patient with teachers—their time to look into new resources is extremely limited, but they play an integral role in society. Supporting them is crucial.”
